Yeah, saw it on HN and forgot to post it a while ago. I was going through some forgotten tabs.
This is the second major resignation at id, so I suspect Bethesda's pressure probably has something to do with it. Particularly since they've dramatically changed much of how id works internally (Rage got rushed after the acquisition) and how they treat their game engines (Tech 5 will never be open sourced or licensed to 3rd parties, for instance). It seems stupid, and I'm sure the market competition for game engines factored partially into the decision, but if Bethesda wants to trash id, that's fine. They haven't produced anything overly interesting since Doom 3, and that felt like a tech demo more than a game.
