Minecraft 1.6 Due out this Week

Minecraft isn't just a chip off the ol' block. It's an addictive and deceptively complicated construction sandbox game. Play in survival mode (multiplayer, too!) while building fortifications to protect against zombie hordes--and other baddies that appear during the night--or try your hand at massive projects in creative mode. We run a local Minecraft server instance for guild members and others on an invite-only basis. See the sticky posts in this forum for details!

Minecraft 1.6 Due out this Week

Postby Zancarius » Tue May 24, 2011 6:30 pm

As a reminder, Minecraft 1.6 is slated to be released Thursday or Friday this week. This next update contains maps and a few other changes (including a huge nerf to fire, sadly).

Typically, this means that Bukkit, the software we use for a number of handy server management mods, is lagged behind by about a week while its developers update the core code for the new version of Minecraft. I tend not to update the server immediately, because Minecraft's server releases are historically unstable for a week or more following a major patch. This time will be no different, and if you update your copy of Minecraft without making a backup, you will likely find that your copy of Minecraft will no longer connect to our site.

So, this is a friendly reminder to make a backup of your .minecraft directory found under %APPDATA%/Roaming/.minecraft (Windows) and ~/.minecraft (everyone else). I would advise against manually updating your client if you still wish to connect to the server.

Minecraft 1.6 was released yesterday along with a few show stopping bugs. Most notably, there are some reports of the server updates causing the Minecraft process to consume 100% CPU time on one or more cores. Since Bukkit will be releasing an update to support 1.6 within the next one to two weeks, we will be holding off on migrating to the new version. I'd rather make sure that Minecraft stabilizes before committing to an update. :)

If you've already updated to a new version of Minecraft, you can back-patch MC using MCNostalgia, but make certain to create backups of your worlds first.

I've noticed that there have been a couple of connections to the Minecraft server akin to:

Code: Select all
08:34:42 [INFO] Disconnecting *REDACTED*[/*REDACTED*:50041]: Outdated server!

While it can be frustrating when the server has not been updated, bear in mind that I tend to keep the server lagged behind major updates by about a week or so, or until Bukkit (server mod) has stabilized. There are still some potentially problematic issues with the Minecraft server software, and I'm waiting to see if they iron out or get fixed.

As a reminder, keep a backup of your .minecraft directory for connecting to the server in the week or so following a major update or don't apply the update until we have. If you have the new launcher, updates are optional.
