That's funny. While I haven't played it, I will confess that what I know of EVE Online, you're definitely right--it's ridiculously complex.
Also entertaining is how everyone is trying to jump onto the MMO bandwagon without realizing at least one of the following things: 1) people have limited time to devote to the timesinks that are MMOs; 2) people are only willing to subscribe to as many entertainment services as they feel they need, can afford, or (#1) have the time for; and 3) the recession has created a surplus of #1 (time) and deficit of #2 (money) for a lot of people which probably implies that established MMOs will simply continue to see a significant portion of their player base continuing to play.
But, I suspect that there are only two reasons why MMOs based on movies or made-for-TV shows appear. One, the TV/entertainment execs think they can make more money by releasing an MMO and press the studio to push one out (common). Two, hardcore fans may want to extend the universe beyond the show and make some demand to have a playable version of the show in video game form (exceedingly rare). But, since entertainment execs still haven't fully figured out how the video game industry works based on the ridiculous number of poor transpositions of movies/shows into games, I can say that at least it's giving some people work. It may not be stable work, but at least it's work.
I gave that lich a phylactery shard. Liches love phylactery shards.
