This is probably why their MotD was reading something about addressing "issues" they were having with applying a new content patch. Just a wild guess.

Although I'm curious why you're having to uninstall/reinstall HG. Perhaps you could explain.

well, every time they apply a patch i get a message stating that the back-temp.mpq could not be created. the error message then proceeds to tell me to uninstall and reinstall. I have contacted blizzard on many accounts and all they tell me is to uninstall and reinstall. They don't tell me why this is happening or how it is happening.

What version of Windows are you running and is it a "Home" edition?

Sorry Killem. I'm not very tactful most times, especially when I'm pretty tired and generally very pissy. Like now.

No offense or insult intended, though--I was just being a sarcastic jerk. ;)

I don't really nerd rage. I just whine and complain or make a bid to get even.

Raging is a complete waste of otherwise useful resources that could be better utilized on something constructive, like retribution. Not that I'm vindictive or anything.

I didn't see your post, HG. You snuck it in while I was responding to Killem.

There are a couple of possibilities. Since you're not running a Home edition, you're immune to some of the more annoying issues with installing software that tries accessing specific directories that the WoW installer/patcher really wants access to. I'll research a little bit about the issue as I think I know what might be causing it, but for now, you might want to check the permissions on your temp directory. To do this:

Open Windows Explorer and go to Organize > Folder and search options > "View" tab > and change the radio button under "hidden files and folders" to "show hidden files, folders, and drives" if it isn't already selected.

Scroll down to the bottom of this list of options and uncheck the "Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended)" as it can sometimes disguise more advanced options and permissions.

Click OK, then navigate from the left pane to your username > AppData > Local and right-click > properties on "Temp."

From this, go to the "Security" tab and click on your username, if it's listed. It should have all the permissions checked under "allow" and they should be grayed out (it's inherited from the parent directory). I don't think WoW extracts this to the temp dir, but it's something to look at.

You may also want to do something similar to the "Downloads" folder under C:\Users\Public, except that the "Administrators" group should be the one with full control.

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can find a more permanent fix. You shouldn't have to reinstall repeatedly, as I've run patches successfully under Win7 Pro x86 and x64.

Here's another fix that involves running WoW with elevated permissions long enough to apply the fix:

This depends on where you've installed WoW, obviously, and may not work if it's another permissions-related issue. It should, though.

Additionally, you might have to try running the individual patch(es) as admin, too:

Did it? Must've been a permissions issue then. In that case, should you wish to fix it permanently, you can hunt around for your WoW directory and right click > properties > security > edit (button) > add (button) > type your username into the "Enter the object names to select" box > click OK > select your user name in the top dialog and check the "full control" checkbox in the bottom part > click OK > click OK and you should be permanently fixed.

I know MCSEs boast about how awesome the Windows permissions model is, but I could condense the above steps in *nix to something like this (assuming /misc/games is where my WoW directory is located):

$ cd /misc/games
$ sudo chown -R myname World\ of\ Warcraft
$ chmod -R u+rw World\ of\ Warcraft # just in case it's read-only

Then done!
