...and this entire time I thought they were joking. Turns out, they weren't. Sun did in fact license Java under the GPL as of today.
While I don't really care much for the language, the fact that it's now under the GPL means it stands to gain immensely from future improvements. Hopefully one of the remedies will be the reduction of its load time. Ever loaded a Java app only to spend a little while twiddling your thumbs? The VM has to load all of the supporting libraries (which are also written in Java) for a total of around 70+ megs. Maybe this will help clear up that bottleneck.
On the other hand, I wonder what this will do for other implementations, such as Blackdown...
