...and this entire time I thought they were joking. Turns out, they weren't. Sun did in fact license Java under the GPL as of today.

While I don't really care much for the language, the fact that it's now under the GPL means it stands to gain immensely from future improvements. Hopefully one of the remedies will be the reduction of its load time. Ever loaded a Java app only to spend a little while twiddling your thumbs? The VM has to load all of the supporting libraries (which are also written in Java) for a total of around 70+ megs. Maybe this will help clear up that bottleneck.

On the other hand, I wonder what this will do for other implementations, such as Blackdown...

Actually, in all due seriousness, I think this is a good step for it. The language would be a good one if it weren't for the fact that Sun's development of it impeded a lot of features that were really pretty good. On the one hand, they took the OOP notion a bit too far off in the wrong direction (Python is more of a true OOP language, IMO) and on the other they had some pretty good ideas. If this solves some of the really irritating problems and factors that I absolutely hate about Java, I probably won't mind coding in it in the future.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed. I hope opening it up will trim the fat.

That could be. Opening it up to those who use it or hate it could fix its quirks that it has or at least make it better to work with.
