There's a few sites making tribute to it, too.

You should link that page that had all of the under construction animations ;)

I may have been young, but I still remember Geocities in the late 90's!

Ask and thou shalt receive:

http://www.textfiles.com/underconstruction/

This is a collection of a significant number of "under construction" banners that appeared on Geocities during the course of its lifetime. Yes, someone actually collected them. All of them. (Well, maybe not ALL--but it's close.)

Snobal's pretty amazing, too, given the fact that I think you're the only one in that generation who actually knows what Geocities was.

I know of some people in the age ranges of 19-25 who have absolutely no recollection of Geocities. At all.

I know... my generation as a whole is a darn shame. =/ But <3arts to you too, Thal! I used to actually cheat on school assignments using Geocities because the teachers were idiots and couldn't figure out what I was up to. Elementary school was a blast in that aspect. :D It was Geocities... and OREGON TRAIL!

That's hilarious. And here I always thought people used Geocities for horrible, awful home pages with little of value.

Though, I take that back. There is a Winamp plugin I regularly use that was hosted on Geocities. Guess I better back that up.

I found this on Hacker News and just now got around to remembering it:

http://reocities.com/

(More about it here: http://reocities.com/newhome/makingof.html )

If there's a particular "neighborhood" that they've recovered, you might be able to access it from there. I don't think they managed to get some of the base accounts, like Arnab's site for his DSP plugin. It's still a very noble effort.

Hahahaha! I was too young to know or care, but IIRC there was some sites I could access that had some decent information on them. That was back when we were used older versions of: Image

Good times :D

And that Reocities site is just amazing...

I was never really impressed with Geocities, of course I had one, but honestly I think I just plopped all the gadgets onto my home page and called it a day.

Totally made me think about the Macs we had in the very first computer lab at my elementary school:

I think the reason that this is such a big deal is because it is a huge chunk of the Internet's history. I realize that Yahoo! simply couldn't keep up with funding what was effectively a dying predecessor to social networking, but it is a shame that we've lost a fragment of what helped shape much of the Internet.

It's a shame they couldn't have just left it up--disable all logins and remove the spammy pages, as several folks have suggested over the weeks. What's done is done, I suppose. Still, it's a shame.
