Chrome Doesn't Cap...

Postby Zancarius » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:48 pm

So, after using Chrome off and on for a while now mostly thanks to Firefox 3.5.x's propensity to crash at random under load, I've discovered something interesting. Sno said that Chrome capped at around 20 processes after a specific number of tabs were created. I believe it doesn't cap, and here's why:

Currently, I have 63 tabs open with a total of 44 Chrome processes running. I have no idea how Chrome's internals work, but it's clear to me that tabs are somehow shared among processes. (Chrome is different from Firefox: Rather than running a single tab per thread under a single process, Chrome runs approximately one process per tab.) Why is this interesting? It's interesting because processes are heavier than threads. They consume slightly more resources and, under Windows, are significantly more expensive to create. However, building applications with a process--not thread--model is more stable. If a single process crashes, you can restart it. When using threads, a single thread crash can tear down the entire application.

If you're getting fed up with some of the problems Mozilla has introduced as of late and are testing other browsers, Chrome might be worthwhile. I can't really say it's significantly more lightweight than Firefox, but it does appear to be safe from leaks:

Here's the Firefox stats

Using the working set as a reasonably fair comparison: Chrome averages a little over 2 megs per tab (yeah, I know, some get paged out). Firefox manages about 3 and a half megs.

I don't think either browser is built with my particular use case in mind.

The irony.

Right after posting this, Firefox crashed.

So Thal, about the problems you and I were both having -- when I downloaded Flash for Chrome, a lot of my problems returned. And Flash doesn't load half the time when it's supposed to. Interesting, since we had traced many of our Firefox problems to Flash.

I think it's because some pages are spanned across threads contained in a single process. Like opening up Wikipedia 50 times might only result in X processes being launched. That's what it appears at least. My process list appears to grow.

I'm probably wrong about it, and it could be based on free system resources. Who knows? I'd have to look at their sources, and I'm not that bored!

So Flash is crashing Chrome now or you're still having the same FF issues I am?

Since adding (perhaps updating) Flash on Chrome
It runs slow as hell. Before was super fast. Still better than FF has become.
Occasionally crashes, seemingly on Flash pages only.
My Google Reader links don't work (FF does this as well).

Interesting... it's gotta be the recent Flash then, because I haven't updated mine in months.

Note: Not updating Flash is asking for trouble. Given Adobe's recent updates, I'm almost wondering if it's better to just do without...
