I've heard that in WWII, the reason Aussie equipment seldom broke down was because they greased that stuff with Vegemite.
I jest.
It's definitely an acquired taste with a PUNGENT odor. It's also quite salty. Though, I'd probably suggest going with Vegemite over Marmite (Marmite is disgusting; similar thing, except it's sweet--stupid Brits). I used to really love it until I was 7 or 8. I didn't have it again until nearly as many years later and couldn't stand the stuff. So, if you like it you love it. If you don't, you hate it. I may try it again in a few more years after a few more spicy dishes; I won't have enough taste buds left to care.
