Why I'm missing

Postby Tirian » Wed Feb 04, 2009 11:47 pm

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know that I've been going through a string of papers, a stomach flu, a regular flu and an overheating issue with my laptop over the past two weeks, hence why I've not been on. Didn't want anyone to think I'd quit or anything...

Word to your mom,

Hope you get to feeling better, Tirian.

Is this the second Toshiba you've had that's overheated?

Thanks man...

No, this is still my same laptop -- the previous overheating issue disappeared after Toshiba finally updated video drivers. This is the first time it's ever overheated outside of playing a game, however, so I consider it much more worrisome.

So I got my laptop back from Best Buy. Did a clean format just to clear the gutters, and because I had already backed up all the files.

Ran WoW. Killed Hellfire demon-pigs for forty minutes. Aaaaaand.... bam.

Overheated and shut down again.

So much for the Best Buy "stress test" to make sure everything had been fixed. :x

Must've been the Geek Squad where the only thing they know how to do is reinstall Windows. Like that's going to help with a hardware problem...

I've known some people who've worked for them and have shared interesting stories. I can also see why they didn't fix the source of the problem.

Yeah I've shared a few good laughs about how they fix computers.

I knew that Chuck show was realistic!

They supposedly reseated the fans, laid down some thermal paste, and cleared all the dust and gunk. They said that the processor (GPU or CPU, didn't say) peaked at 90 Celsius afterwards during the "stress test" (which they claimed would be Bioshock and/or WoW with everything running at high-quality). Well, my GPU was at 120 last night when it shut itself down.

Unless you're operating it in really crummy conditions, I honestly don't see how your laptop could possibly wind up with enough crap in it to overheat that quickly. Hell, I have a fairly old Dell that's never given me heating problems.

I'm curious: When you play WoW on it, do you tend to leave it on a table with a fairly decent amount of circulation around it? If that's the case, it sounds like it might be a defect.

I'm not sure if any of these would help. Might be worth a try...

It sits on a wooden desk with nothing blocking the ventilation on the sides and no cloth, etc. on the bottom. The nearest heat source is a lamp a couple feet away. Really, I have no idea what's going on at this point.

It seriously sounds like there's a bad defect with it. Unfortunately, I suspect the clowns at Best Buy are probably going to keep telling you that they "stress tested it" and it was fine. I don't suppose it's still in warranty?

Oh, and was this the Toshiba?

It's on Best Buy warranty through September, part of why I need to fix this now -- in case I do research abroad this summer.

Yes, it's my Toshiba.
