Pretty much the way it works is simple. Websites get paid by companies to host their products and/or services on their sites.
When it is all said and done, you end up paying about the same price for the item you want (In this case, a wow subscription)
You (in most cases) can sign up for two different account types.
Offer-Completion Account
In this account type, you complete offers for products or services. For example: 1 month subscription to Netflix.
You complete so many offers (ammount of offers needed increase as value for your desired product increases).
The cost for each offer varies.
Refferal Point Account
In this account, you are given a special URL that is unique to your account.
You send it to friends, family, etc. using a premade template. (Note that spam e-mails are declared invalid by the company)
Once the people who have received your email complete an offer, you get points.
The ammount of points required increase as value for the item you want increases.
In my oppinion, it just isn't worth the hastle. But that's just me.
