Nope. Hell just froze over, pigs can fly, and Blizzard isn't taking WoW down for the Tuesday maintenance cycle anymore.

Hrmm.... If you give me you name I'll call the support line everyday and ask to speak to you instead of some Indian guy.

I'm sure I can conjure something up.

Do you think you can fix the issue with Vista and WOW so I can come back?

That would be great. :D

Steps: (EZ-Mode)

1. Take Vista
2. Crack it in half
3. Install XP (even though your laptop probably lacks the drivers -- I'm assuming you have a laptop)
4. Call Microsoft for a solid month telling them how much Vista sucks and how you hate their products and services.

LOL

It's sad, but WoW actually runs more smoothly under Wine in Linux than it does on the same hardware in Windows. I've been using Windows a bit more (I unfortunately don't have much choice) due to software for class running exclusively under Windows... and doesn't like running under Wine. *sigh* Anyway, I've found my average frame rate is actually somewhat higher under Linux.

I think you may have mentioned the problem you were having before, Aigle, but I can't seem to remember it. Perhaps we could offer some assistance?

You should be able to, Sno. I don't use Vista and don't plan on using it for a long time. Plus, I've only ever installed WoW once. (That's right, I'm using the exact same install from when I first played Open Beta back in the end of 2004. How's that for longevity?)

The problem itself is not with the installation (I got that completed the other night..for the gazillionth time...) it's the patching. I don't remember which one will not install. I did contact Blizzard and their resolution method did not alieviate the problem.

Below is the original email I sent for my S.O.S

-----Original Message-----
From: [email removed]
To: wowtech@blizzard.com
Sent: 12/30/2007 7:14:40 PM
Subject: Problems with installation and patching

I have reinstalled and run defrag, and virus scan through my computer several times to no avail I constantly receive this error:

The file "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\World of Warcraft\World of Warcraft.lnk.Temporary" could not be created. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Create)

My CD's are a little over two years old, but are in good condition as I keep them in their protective sleeves inside a CD case. could this be the cause of my issues with downloading and installing pach's?

My account name is under gwenwhyfare.

Please advise.

And WOW's tech support response:

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Blizzard Technical Support, my name is Jon. If you are having trouble patching the game while running Windows Vista for any reason please try each of the steps below. These steps have resolved a large number of patch issues for players.

Because the issue you are having can be caused by a multitude of reasons, I have included a rather long list of troubleshooting steps to try so I do apologize for the amount of information included in this email. If any of these do not work please let me know the result of each step as that will greatly help in proceeding to the next step.

World of Warcraft will patch in Windows Vista only if World of Warcraft is set to run in Administrator Mode. In order to set the game as Administrator Mode, please follow the steps below:

1. Right click on the World of Warcraft icon.
2. Select "Run as Administrator"

If you have additional permissions questions, you should refer to your Windows help files or documentation.

Please make sure you have all the available updates from Microsoft.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

We have received a number of reports that temporarily uninstalling firewall, anti-virus, and security software programs will permit World of Warcraft to patch successfully. Some examples of these types of programs are Norton, McAfee, and ZoneAlarm. Of course do not remove security software if you can't reinstall it, however removing these programs will minimize or eliminate the chance they will interfere with the patching process.

If you are receiving an error stating the file checksums do not match, then you have corrupt game files. We have a repair utility that can check your files and replace any that may be corrupted. The Repair.exe should be located in your World of Warcraft directory (example C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Repair.exe).

If this file is not present you can download the latest version at http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/WoW/other/Repair.zip
Be sure to unzip the file into your World of Warcraft directory and run it from there.

Reverting the game to a previous version may also assist with the troubleshooting process. In order to revert the game to a previous version, please try the following steps:

1. Open your World of Warcraft directory (This is commonly located at C:\Program files\World of Warcraft)
2. Open the folder called "Data"
3. Delete the Patch.MPQ file
4. Run the repair.exe utility found in the World of Warcraft directory
5. Click the button "Reset and Check Files"
6. The repair utility will say, "World of Warcraft is seriously damaged and will need to be reverted to an earlier version. After it has been reverted you may need to patch up to continue playing."
7. Once the repair utility has completed, you will need to reapply the patch to enter the game.

Try booting your system in Selective Startup may resolve the issue for you. A background application can interfere significantly with the patch process. You can find more information and detailed instructions for this mode on the World of Warcraft Closing Background Applications page:
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... leId=21052

Doing a scan of the computer's physical memory can help you identify RAM problems which could cause this issue. We are tentatively recommending users try memory scan utilities such as the Windows Vista Memory Diagnostic Tool. Using this tool will require a reboot so please save any documents you have open.

1. Click Start
2. In the Start Search field type in "memory" and hit Enter.
3. The first option you see should say Memory Diagnostic Tool.
4. Run the Memory Diagnostic Tool - A window will pop up asking you if you want to reboot and check for problems not or check for problems the next time you restart.
5. If you choose to restart now, Vista will reboot into the memory diagnostic utility.

Finally, you should make sure the hard drive is working properly, and free of viruses and spyware. These pages will help with that:
- ScanDisk/Defrag: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... leId=21144
- Computer Security: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... leId=21118

If none of the solutions above have helped, you may want to try downloading the patch manually from one of our mirror sites. Our Patch Mirror site can be found at the link below:
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... leId=21079

NOTE: You may want to try different variations of the steps above. Attempting multiple steps together has resolved patching issues for many players.

If you are still experiencing patching issues, please reply back to this email and include:
- The exact text of any error messages you're seeing
- Where in the download or patch process the error occurs
- Any other information that may help us troubleshoot the problem

Sincerely,

Jon D.

Anyway, for now I'll just stay with Last Chaos till I can get the money together for XP (I prefer it over Vista, anyway). Found a cool group of people who like to pwn higher level beasts :D (I hit 14 last night, woo!)

Hey, sorry for the late response. Have you tried manually creating the folder without result? It could be Vista not allowing it to write a directory.
If this doesn't work, let me know.

I removed your e-mail address from the post to reduce the additional farming spambots might perform, so don't panic when you re-read it and see [email removed].

I'll take some time later to research this and see if I can come up with any additional suggestions. I doubt I'll be able to offer much beyond that considering I've never touched Vista (and don't want to!). Lumi is definitely the person to ask for suggestions, though, since I'm sure he's seen stuff like this on a regular basis (if you lived nearby, I'd suggest taking it in to his shop to take a look).

Thanks, Thal. I hadn't even thought to take off my email..Nice that you left wow's tech supoort though ;)

No huge rush. I'm not in a place to make a change just yet due to time. I took on a part time job on top of my full time job so gaming isn't quite top priority. I'll revisit the issue maybe when another expansion comes out and tech support has had a chance to work on some of the issues with patching.

Or I'm doomed to join the dieing warcraft breed.....

...nah :P

Thanks for the help!

EDIT:

And Sno! I'm sorry, I hadn't mentioned a thank you to you as well..And everyone else!
