The videos coming in right now are pretty terrifying. Almost wonder if this was traveling along with the smallish (40-90 meter wide) asteroid scheduled to fly by tomorrow?
One source claims that the Russians were able to intercept the meteor with their air defense systems, but there's no obvious contrail leading up from the ground, and I'd expect that something traveling as fast as a meteor would be somewhat difficult to intercept. They're usually traveling quite a bit faster than a satellite in LEO even when slowed by atmospheric drag. Otherwise, if they did, that's an impressive feat.
Edit:
Judging by the trajectory of the one coming in tomorrow, if I'm reading this right, I suspect today's event was just a coincidence.
