Gentoo

What can I say? It kicks ass. Here's the Gnome desktop environment:

Drop-shadows on the Windows vis-a-vis MacOS are also supported. Here's a shot of the xcompmgr drawing the shadows on my laptop:

I don't have the latter on my desktop yet, being as Gnome 2.14 supposedly has on that is integrated--but not enabled. I'm not sure I'm quite willing to try it yet =)

http://torrents.gentoo.org/

I'd strongly suggest getting the 2006.0 livecd torrent since it has the graphical installer. Gentoo is NOT easy to use, it's designed to be comprehensive and configurable.

Actually, if you're looking for something pretty easy to use and a lot more straightforward than Gentoo, Ubuntu Linux is generally a good choice. I've heard much better things about it than Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, and Debian. It does have some weird idiosyncracies, and everything has to be done through sudo rather than using su. I know a few people who are pretty satisfied with Ubuntu, although Gentoo really seems to have taken the power users by storm (even a lot of folks from the BSD crowd, such as myself).

Yeah. If you use windows on the computer you want to set that up on, I suggest getting a separate machine to put it on so you have one to look up the gentoo forums and be able to play WOW on until you get your linux environment setup for game play :)

Most *nixes run very well on subpar hardware. I have an old P-III box sitting around and Xorg runs very well on it. =)

Although, from experience, FreeBSD tends to be the most forgiving with failing hardware.
