ok so my computer has decided to be stupid. When i select shut down from the start menu the computer will stop at the shutting down dialog indefinite. Windows 7 professional 64 bit

Never powers off? Could be an ACPI issue or anything really.

Did you check the event log? Start -> Control Panel -> Admin tools -> Event Viewer -> expand Windows Logs -> click on System or Application and have a look through around about the time frame the shutdown screen appears for errors. You probably won't find anything here, so I'd wager it's probably a driver issue or recent update causing grief.

If you pop the reset button (if you have one) or forcibly power it off, does it pop up with the "Windows did not shut down normally" rubbish the next time you turn it on?

yep, gives me the option for safe mode and such

Check the event log to see if it reported anything it thinks was holding up the shutdown process.
