Bethesda to make MMO

Postby Killemal » Mon Apr 14, 2008 5:04 pm

I've seen quite a bit of chatter about people getting tired of WoW, and even some hard-core players saying that WoW is loosing it's luster. In case you haven't been following, Bethesda (makers of the Elder Scrolls series of RPG's) recieved an INSANE amount of backing to launch an Elder Scrolls MMORPG. Bethesda even purchased elderscrollsonline.com a while back, seemingly confirming the rumors that the game would be, in fact, Elder Scrolls based and not Fallout as some fans dreamed (this one included.) Could this be a new path for weary WoWers to spend hours working through?

I know after playing Oblivion through 3 times that I'm gonna be pre-ordering my subscription if this thing ever takes flight.

I'm surprised they didn't get into the MMO game sooner. Their elder scrolls games are huge! Imagine an MMO of that stuff!

They've been asked (okay, begged) since before Morrowind to do an MMO, but they've always said that due to their commitment to providing real world-changing events in game (the way factional associations shift the whole political landscape both dependent and independent of the player, how the player's actions change landscapes and reactions) that they could never pull it off in a multiplayer setting because everything is static and constantly reset for each player.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't be awesome though! The only company I can think of that does world-building as well as Bethesda would be Blizz.

Then again, Bethesda has been responsible for all those awful Star Trek games.

Star Trek is bad enough, I couldn't imagine it in a game...
I gave that Lich a phylactery shard. Liches love phylactery shards.

I've been looking for a ship-flying game of late. I've ruled all of these out...

Have you tried EVE: Online yet? That was kind of fun when I was trying it out.

Yeah I agree, but I find it really stressful to even begin to try to play in that economy. I mean, just trying to buy a new weapon seems to require a whole Excel spreadsheet just to figure out if it's a proper upgrade. I like playing with Auctioneer but I don't want to have to start tracking paths through "space" and current price trends and all that, which seems to be what a lot of people do.

Of course, it's possible I just had a completely wrong impression of it. If that's the case, they need to make the first few levels more sensible.

I am wanting to see how Bioware makes the Knights of the Old Republic MMO. I am thinking of trying that out.
